SCHOOL PROFILE
Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, Washington Elementary School is a K-5 school of approximately 300 students in the Westwood Regional School District. Established in 1957, Washington School has maintained a tradition of academic excellence.
Washington School has a positive and safe learning environment where all students are treated with respect and their uniqueness is recognized, valued and nurtured. Everyone works together to foster learning in order to enhance literacy, promote technology, and improve character education. Our goal is to provide the opportunity for each student to be the “best they can be.”
While providing a rigorous academic experience, Washington School offers a rich, nurturing environment supported by dedicated teachers and a full-time nurse. Related service providers include speech/language therapists, physical and occupational therapists, Child Study Team (CST) members, and instructional aides who support classified students. The Intervention & Referral Services (I&RS) model supports at-risk non-classified students. Our school guidance counselor provides support in the academic, personal, and social needs of students. The gifted and talented program is offered for identified students in a pull-out setting.
Technology is an integral component of learning at Washington School. Technological resources help our teachers deliver instruction more effectively, and allow our students to complete independent, self-directed learning projects in various subject areas. Every classroom is equipped with networked laptops and computers for daily student use, as well as SMART Board technology, allowing for hands-on, interactive lessons and demonstrations.
The faculty and staff of Washington School are committed to creating a learning environment that encourages and supports positive student behavior school-wide. Students are recognized for displaying kindness, responsibility, preparedness, and cooperation through individual and whole school incentives via our Cool Cardinals Program. Spirit Assemblies throughout the school year bring the school together as a community to celebrate our successes and highlight student achievements.
A successful educational program depends on the cooperation of parents, teachers, and the community, working together towards a shared vision. Washington School is fortunate to have an involved Parent School Organization (PSO) that is committed to helping students to be as successful as possible. The PSO supports our students by providing cultural enrichment opportunities, hosting community-building events, and fundraising.
The faculty and staff of Washington School are devoted to the belief that each student is an individual with unique needs and abilities. We strive to help each student achieve his or her fullest potential while developing a life-long love for learning. This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun and nurturing environment.
